DOMAIN
The autonomous region of Navarra extends from the central Pyrenees to the Ebro Valley through a variety of landscapes. Spectacular mountains in the north give way to green, undulating foothills and, in the south, an arid plain. The vineyards of Navarra DO are located in the southern part of the region, between Pamplona and the plains.

The first records of winemaking in Navarra date back to Roman times. In the 2nd century BC the Romans built wineries in the ‘fundi’ (lands in the region that, once conquered, were given to retired soldiers). In medieval times the vineyards flourished, in part to cater to the pilgrims who travelled through on the “Pilgrims’ Way” to Santiago. The 12th-century pilgrims’ guides recommended Navarrese wine an “excellent”.

WINEMAKER: Nora Iriarte

Nora Iriarte creates El burro, Kickass Garnacha at Bodegas Principe de Viana which is located in Cadrieta. The vines are over 100 years old and grow in limy marls of Eocene and Miocene origin, with alluvial soils in the river basins. The climate is semi-arid Mediterranean. The grapes are machine picked in October under excellent harvest conditions. The yield is 6 tons/ha.

Ratings/Reviews

Rating by RobertParker.com
The Independent Consumer's Guide to Fine Wines

Rating: 89 points
The 2005 El Burro “Kickass” Garnacha was fermented in tank and barrel aged 4 months in American oak. Tasting like a village Cotes du Rhone, this purple colored wine has aromas of kirsch and garrigue, ripe cherry and jammy red currant flavors, and enough structure to last for 3-5 years. It is an excellent value. This wine deftly reveals both elegance and power.— Jay Miller (Feb 2007)
